In our darkest moments, the enemy will use every insecurity that we have in order to draw us further from God. Those things that you normally give little thought to will become impenetrable brick walls held together by the lies of the enemy. Those times when you’re sitting alone in your room, pining for a husband or praying for a wife because you’ve been told that God said “marriage is the ideal” and “there’s someone for everyone” are the times that we need to be the most on our guard. These are the times that we must be sure to have some solid truth verses in our arsenal in order to combat those lies that seem so true when we are in a vulnerable place.
This week I’ve compiled a list of 5 truth verses that define who God is and why we can trust Him and His plan.
- 1 Corinthians 7: 8 “But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am…”

This should be a go-to verse for any single person who feels bombarded by the messages (often from the world and even those in the church) that you MUST be married or that the bible says everyone must get married. Let me put your mind at ease. The bible doesn’t say that you MUST be married. It says that marriage is good, yes, but I also find comfort in this verse that says that being single is good, too. As I’ve said before in many previous posts, being single is not the “less-than” option to being married. The bible specifically states that marriage is good, but singleness is equally as good. So always remember that your marital status is not tied to your worth, God loves you the same either way.
2. Malachi 3:6 “For I am the LORD, I do not change.”

This is an important verse to help give a solid picture of who God is. It would be incredibly difficult to depend on a god who is constantly changing. If we didn’t know what to expect of Him from day to day it would not make sense for us to put our hope, faith, and future in His hands. The good news is that we see clearly here that God does NOT change. He isn’t like anything else in this world that is temporary and changes on a near daily basis. He is reliable, He is stable, and He is the one who holds your best interests in His ever loving hands.
3. 1 Timothy 2:5-6 “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.”

This verse lays out the truth in God’s plan. It establishes that a) there is one God, b) that Jesus is the mediator between God and us and c) Jesus has already paid the price for our sins. When you experience those feelings of doubt that inevitably arise in regard to God’s character, turn to this truth in 1 Timothy and shut down those doubts for good.
4. John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

I have this verse on this list to remind you why you need God’s truth. It’s easy to bury your head in the sand and continue along the path that you’ve always been on toward self doubt, self loathing, and dissatisfaction in life. While ignorance may be bliss, this is not the area of life to remain ignorant. When it comes to God, knowing His truth will ultimately be what sets you free from the chains and bondage of satan’s lies.
5. Psalm 46: 10 “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Do you ever forget to take the time to sit back and just remember that God is God and He’s in control? I know that I don’t take enough time to remind myself of this very important truth. I scurry about my life from moment to moment, always forgetting who is ultimately in charge, therefore causing some seriously unneeded stress and anxiety. I also tend to talk at God and not take the time to listen to whatever He might have to say back to me. When I forget to give God the glory in ALL things, even those that may not seem like something worth giving glory for (like your single life), this verse serves as a reminder of the importance to take time out to be still with God and to glorify Him in all things because He is worthy of the glory
It’s easy to get caught up in life and internalize the falsehoods of this world. That is why it’s so important to internalize God’s truth instead. Knowing these truths allows you to use them as a shield to combat those negative, self- defeating messages we all encounter in our daily lives. It takes discipline and devotion to studying His word ( I struggle with this discipline, too) in order to have these truths become inherent in your mind. Take comfort, dear friend, in knowing that eventually, with some effort on your part, God’s truths will become the messages that resound in your heart and mind and you’ll be able to fight off the lies like the true warrior you are.
